About Mt Hanang
Mount Hanang, rising to 3,420 meters above sea level, is the fourth-highest mountain in Tanzania and one of the country’s best-kept secrets. Located in the Manyara Region near Katesh town, this solitary volcanic peak offers an experience of wilderness and culture far away from the traditional safari routes. The mountain is surrounded by a patchwork of farms and traditional villages, home to the Barbaig and Iraqw people, whose vibrant cultures add a unique dimension to any visit. The lower slopes are covered in fertile farmland, giving way to montane forest and open high-altitude grasslands as you climb higher. For hikers, Mount Hanang provides a rewarding day or overnight trek. The ascent to the summit is challenging but accessible for adventurous travelers, with trails offering panoramic views of the Rift Valley, Lake Balangida, and the vast plains stretching to the horizon. The experience is peaceful and uncrowded, as few visitors make the journey here. Unlike Kilimanjaro and Meru, Hanang remains largely untouched by mass tourism, making it a perfect choice for those looking for an authentic and off-the-beaten-path adventure in Tanzania. AYAD Safari Connect arranges guided treks to Mount Hanang for travelers seeking to combine cultural interaction with a true wilderness hiking experience. Our expert guides ensure safe and memorable climbs, sharing insights about the local communities, natural history, and breathtaking scenery that make Hanang an exceptional hidden gem in Tanzania.

2 days Trip Mount hanang
Hanang is the fourth-highest mountain of Tanzania (after Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and Mount Loolmalasin). It is an extinct vulcano like the others and its peak has an elevation of 3,423 m / 11,230 ft above sea level. The mountain is part of the Mount Hanang nature forest located close to Lake Manyara National Park and Tarangine National Park, two major tourist destinations for wildlife safari in northern Tanzania. Mount Hanang Nature Forest is a great water source with several rivers and beautiful lakes.
3 days trip Mount Hanang
The difficulty of this trail comes from the extreme incline on its steep slopes. In 8.5 km / 5,3 miles you will ascend more than 1,600 m / 5,250 ft - and this is done at a high elevation. The terrain is rocky and there are sections where you will need to be sure-footed, but no big drop-offs or moments of exposure. Basically, if you feel fit enough for a steep ascent and are not afraid of cold camping conditions (on the 2 day trip) you are all set for this brilliant adventure.
